Russian teenager banned from tennis for nine months following anti-doping breach
Sergey Kovalev has been handed a nine-month ban for testing positive for a banned substance.
The former world number one player returned to competition following anti-doping authorities’ ruling that he passed a drug at a 2010 tournament in Argentina.
He had tested positive for the anabolic steroid nandrolone at an event at the Tarragona tournament.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Tuesday confirmed the ban, which was put in place last month.
Russian whistleblower Kovalev faces a one-year ban when he returns to competition following the conclusion of his nine-month suspension.
Kovalev has been banned from competitive tennis since the ban, and is now expected to return to the circuit in November.
