MALAWI/ABIDJAN: Mourners from the Church of Christ in Africa arrived quietly in the country of Malawi, where at least 25 people, mostly Ethiopians, were killed by police during a raid on a mass grave, and police found more bodies nearby.
The report by the East African Community (EAC) said that more than 150 bodies were found at the location of the mass grave on Sunday, Aug 2. The men were suspected of being traffickers.
The EAC’s Chief Peace and Security Officer (CPSO) Charles Nyang’eme said EAC police in Malawi had been in contact with the Malawi government to follow up on the findings.
“The investigation by the Malawian government into the mass grave in Matako Hill is complete. In a joint investigation between the Malawi government and EAC peacekeeping forces, it has been established that the victims in this particular case were probably killed on or around August 1, 2013. The investigation, in detail, is ongoing.
“The police officer responsible for the investigation was promptly suspended from duty and referred to the EAC police service management to follow up on the findings. The government has also instructed the police to maintain a high level of security and to avoid disturbing the investigation,” Nyang’eme said on Monday.
The investigation by Malawi authorities has not been without its own casualties. Nyang’eme said:
“As a result of the investigation, the Malawian government has taken the decision to seek the extradition of the two Malawian nationals who are currently in EAC prisons, where they are serving sentences for their participation in the murders of the victims in the mass grave. The EAC police authorities in Malawi are currently engaged in efforts to release them.”
